Mateo, could you briefly introduce yourself and share a bit about your academic and professional background in hospitality and tourism management?

My name is Mateo Radić, and I am 22 years old with a bachelor's degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. Born and raised in Dubrovnik, one of the world's most famous tourist destinations, I developed a strong passion for hospitality from a young age.

I pursued my studies at RIT Croatia, where I had the incredible opportunity to participate in two Erasmus exchanges—one in Spain and another in Turkey. These experiences allowed me to immerse myself in diverse and fascinating cultures, broadening my perspective on global hospitality.

Professionally, I've had the privilege of working in several renowned 5-star hotels, including Hotel More, a part of ALH - Adriatic Luxury Hotels, and Villa Dubrovnik, widely regarded as the finest hotel on the coast. These roles provided me with invaluable experience and the chance to interact with significant figures in the hospitality industry.

One pivotal experience in my career was working as a bartender at Taj Mahal, a Michelin-recommended restaurant, where I significantly developed my skills and customer service approach. Currently, I am working as a concierge at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel, where I hope to embark on a fulfilling career in hospitality.

What inspired you to pursue a career in hospitality and tourism?

What inspired me to pursue a career in hospitality and tourism is my genuine love for people and the meaningful interactions I have with them. Growing up in Dubrovnik I was constantly surrounded by diverse cultures and fascinating individuals, which sparked my interest in hospitality

Moreover, the hospitality industry offers tremendous space for personal and professional growth.

What do you think is the most important value to uphold in the hospitality industry, and why?

I believe the most important value to uphold in the hospitality industry is genuine empathy. Hospitality is fundamentally about making guests feel welcome, valued, and cared for, and empathy is at the heart of this mission.

When we understand and anticipate the needs and feelings of our guests, we can provide personalized and exceptional service that leaves a lasting impression

Since participating in the Best Stay event last year, how has your perspective on the hospitality industry changed or evolved?

Participating in the Best Stay event last year showed me that all of the big, “tough” leaders of the industry have a soft heart full of understanding. They showed real empathy, especially towards us students.

Have you taken on any new roles or projects within your studies at RIT Croatia or in your professional work?

As mentioned above, I moved to another hotel company and accepted a lower paid job in order to start and advance in my hospitality career.

What were some key insights or skills you gained from the Best Stay event that have influenced your approach to your studies or work in the hospitality industry?

That would definitely be public speaking since I was part of the student panel where we spoke in front of 100 industry leaders.

Positive feedback genuinely helped me in public speaking and speaking out for myself as well.

In what ways did participating in the panel discussion and program at Best Stay enhance your understanding of diversity and cultural exchange in the hospitality industry?

It helped me to understand that all of us have different ways of solving and dealing with problems but our common goal should be the same, and that is happy customer.

How do you balance your academic responsibilities with your personal life and professional aspirations?

It’s very hard to balance all of those things but those who want to be part of the Hospitality industry should accept that way of living or otherwise they will get punched in the face by the reality of the industry.

What life lesson or value do you consider most crucial for personal and professional growth?

To be genuine because friends ( personal life) and guests ( professional life) recognize that and are returning it by the same measure.

What are your career goals after graduating from RIT Croatia?

To find the perfect hotel where I would learn all possible things about hospitality and one day start something similar on my own.

What advice would you give to other students who are considering participating in industry events like Best Stay?

After the Erasmus exchange in Spain and Turkey, the Best stay event was my favorite experience since enrolling in college. So many interactions which benefited my career, made friends, had fun and learn to be responsible.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience or any final thoughts on the importance of student involvement in industry events?

I would like to encourage all students to visit events such as Best stay event because they lit the spark in you and they either confirm or deny your love towards Hospitality industry.
